Notice about 2010 budget cutbacks
As you may be aware the Library is facing a $625,000 budget shortfall for 2010. Management has been working on ways to deal with this shortfall and minimize the impact on services. You can read Barry Holmes’ posting on this subject on the staff intranet (available only from work).
In his posting Barry writes, “In response to a staff suggestion, we are also doing an analysis of the implications of closing a week over Christmas. Please note that the M-Team has not recommended this strategy for 2010.”
Please understand that this option is NOT simply asking staff to take vacations during this closure without loss of pay. Such a closure will mean forced layoffs with loss of pay.
Management is working towards absorbing the budget shortfall without any cuts to core services or staff layoffs, and the Union will be reinforcing to management that it does not support any option that involves staff layoffs.
Please DO NOT suggest to management that a forced closure of all branches for one or more weeks in order to deal with the budget shortfall is acceptable. This is something that the Union is working to prevent. Forced closure and layoff is an option that the Board and management will consider, but let’s not give them the impression that we are OK with it. Let’s make them find other solutions to the budget problem that do not hit us in our own pocketbooks.
If you have concerns or suggestions, please talk to your union representative first. You can contact President Helen Hughes at hugheshc@yahoo.ca, or Vice-President Holman Louis at hlouis@telus.net.
