What is Pay Equity?
This is the definition of "Pay Equity" in Quebec's legislation:
What is pay equity?
Pay equity refers to the attribution to positions traditionally occupied by women of remuneration equivalent to the remuneration paid for positions traditionally occupied by men, even when the jobs are different, provided that they have the same value.
The principle of pay equity goes beyond the notion of "equal pay for equal work", since it demands "equal pay for different but equivalent work."
Part of the differences in compensation between men and women can, of course, be explained by the more limited experience of women on the labour market or, in some instances, the shorter hours that they work.
However, due to systemic discrimination, certain aspects of women's work are not properly considered from the standpoint of remuneration, which also contributes to the salary gap between men and women.
